The seven-member Independent Review Committee to be chaired by Retired South African Judge Justice Johann Kriegler was sworn in Thursday morning by Chief Justice Evan Gicheru at his Chambers at the High Court in Nairobi.
The independent panel is now set to kick start an inquiry into last year’s disputed presidential polls.
The committee includes two international experts, Tanzanian Lady Justice Imani Daudi Aboud and Dr. Horacio Boneo of Argentina and four Kenyan experts, Prof. Marangu M’Marete, Mrs. Catherine Muyeka Mumma, Mr. Francis Angila and Mrs. Lucy Kambuni.
The seven-member committee has already been gazetted and is expected to commence its work within thirty days for the next three months.
Among key witnesses expected to appear before the public inquiry are the Electoral Commission of Kenya, politicians, members of the public, the civil society and election observers.
The commission will have powers to summon anyone it deems to have information and compel them to cooperate under oath.
The meetings will mainly be open to the public unless under special circumstances when they will be held privately.
