One of the most dreaded commanders of the outlawed Sabaot Land Defence Force (SLDF) has been arrested in Bungoma District.
Mr Moses Chemwotei alias Kamaliza, accused of chopping off ears of his victims, finally fell in the hands of police at Kamukuywa market after being on the run for more than five months.
Police arrested the militia leader following a militia deserter’s tip off that Chemwotei was staying in a hideout in the district. According to police report, Kamaliza used to command a large regiment of SLDF militiamen in Kopsiro division before he went into hiding when Okoa Maisha Operation was launched.
Confirming the arrest, Kopsiro DO Mr Sylvester Mwangulu said the much sought-after militia commander worked closely with the late SLDF commander Wycliffe Matwakei, who was gunned down by the military recently.
“He was among the few remaining militia leaders and his arrest is a big boost to the fight against the illegal militias,” said Mwangulu.
He added that the Kamaliza, who was taken into custody at Kimilili Police Station under heavy security, would be handed over to security officers at the Kapkoto military.
“We know he has information over the whereabouts of his fellow commanders and militiamen still on the run. He will assist us get them,” added the administrator.
Meanwhile, the ‘Okoa Maisha Operation’ commander, Major Mwanzia, has hailed the new co-operation between the residents and security forces. He said the move has led to the arrest of many other suspects
